Casualties in tank incident at Castlemartin firing range

A number of people are believed to have been injured in a tank incident at a military training base in Pembrokeshire.

The Welsh Ambulance Service was called to Castlemartin firing range just before 15:30 BST on Wednesday.

A Ministry of Defence spokeswoman said: "We are aware of an incident at Castlemartin ranges.

"This is still being investigated and therefore it would be inappropriate to comment further."

Hope it isn't as bad as the one on Salisbury plain years ago, when the Chally turned turtle killing the commander and trapping the gunner.

Who ever heard of someone getting a job at the Jobcentre? The unemployed are sent there as penance for their sins, not to help them find work!

Terrible news, I second your comments Stu. Stand easy lads, your duty is done.

It was reported a shell exploded on loading or some similar malfunction. Tell us Stu, are munitions still manually loaded on a Chally 2 as I know on the Abrams the gunner basically selects the munition type and the target order in the case of multiple targets on his screen and everything else is automated and that can include firing.

Yes, still manually loaded, as are the Abrahams I believe. The munitions cant really explode by themselves as there is not enough distance or force to activate them. What tends to happen in this scenario is the breach fails and the charge fires back into the tank. This could be a catastrophic explosion but most likely would have been a flare through the breach essentially burning back into the tank like a flamethrower.

Very rare though.

Grumpy I could not have answered that question from eb better as you are correct.

I have dealt with a similar scenario except different outcome to this thread.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family, friends & regiment.

Castlemartin: Soldiers died after tank blast during training

Two soldiers died after an explosion in a tank during an exercise at the Castlemartin firing range in Pembrokeshire, an inquest has heard.

Corporals Matthew Hatfield and Darren Neilson from the Royal Tank Regiment died after the blast on 14 June.

The provisional cause of death for Cpl Hatfield was "burns", while Cpl Neilson suffered a cardiac arrest as a result of blast-related injuries, the Birmingham hearing was told.

Two other soldiers were injured.

One is still in a serious condition in hospital and the other has been discharged from hospital.

A police-led joint investigation with the Health and Safety Executive and a separate Ministry of Defence service inquiry are currently under way.
