An agency nurse walked out of her care home shift after just four hours after witnessing shocking conditions, she told a coroner looking into the deaths of three male residents.

The Nurse was giving evidence at a Coroner's hearing into the the deaths of the 3 men. The tale told was quite shocking and I was surprised that the coroner reckons that neglect was not a contributory factor into their deaths !.

I think I would rather go to Switzerland and take my own life than end up in a care home. I guess you cant tar them all with the same brush, but even those where residents pay very high fees are coming under scrutiny !

My Aunt was in a lovely care home with staff that really cared about the residents. It was very expensive at over £30k a year, but that was the average cost at the time for homes that specialised in dementia care.

They do a very difficult job, as those they care for are at the end of their lifes. I am not sure how they cope, when you have people who struggle to remember anything for more than a few minutes and can get quite emotional when a memory returns to them. They also have the other problems to deal with, needing help with getting people dressed, going to the bathroom etc. Many of these care home staff only earn little more than the minimum wage.

It might be the case that some care homes really struggle with the task they have taken on and they end up with these staffing problems, which leads to neglect. There is no excuse, but you can understand why it happens. In every area of the country you will have these situations. Locally a care home was subject to a critical report about the quality of care and put under special measures. There is a process of checking quality and people must report any issues they see.

We could do with some help from you.

I have seen personally both the poor and the excellent conditions of some Care homes, Uncle B and it worries me that those dedicated people who do care, are paid such pitiful salaries.

Sadly the whole system appears to be breaking down at the moment.
