I am enquiring on behalf of a friend who recently changed employer - he is still doing the same job but through a sub contractor.

When he finished, under the instruction of a supervisor, he left electronic items he had been provided with by the employer in the company office.

He has since been informed that these items have gone missing and so he owes them over £1000 and his last weeks wages were withheld to go towards this amount.

Are the company allowed to do that and is there anything he can do to appeal this?

Thank you for any advice.

Did he have any witnesses that saw him put the equipment back? Does he have any proof? Cameras etc?

Any advice i give is my own and is based solely on personal experience. If in any doubt about a situation , please contact a certified legal representative or debt counsellor..

If my advice helps you, click the star icon at the bottom of my post and feel free to say thanks

Needs to check his contract. Is there a clause within the contract which allows for such a deduction? If not then the employer cannot withhold wages irrespective of any innocence or guilt. The employer would have to pursue any such losses separately

Any advice given is done so on the assumption that recipients will also take professional advice where appropriate.
