The Great British Benefits Handout: Outrage as family buys PLAYSTATION after £26k freebie

Next episode Tuesday, 16th February 2016

CHANNEL 5’S provocative new reality show The Great British Benefits Handout certainly caused a stir on Twitter after the first episode, as a group of families were given a £26,000 cash handout in return for quitting welfare support.

However, one of the most divisive moments in the opening episode came when one Hull-based family’s first act was to purchase a brand new PlayStation 4 console - totaling almost £400.

Now did Channel 5 choose people who would make the most of this opportunity or did it deliberately choose people who would squander the funds in order to provide further fuel for those who criticise Benefit recipients ?

It is good that these people are exposed, but it gives genuine claimants a bad name. When we went through a bad spell about 20 years ago we borrowed a B/W portable TV with a 10" screen and sat on boxes to watch TV illegally as we could not afford a TV licence. Food was bought at the cheapest place possible. The last thing we woudl have thought fo was squandering money on unnecessary which seems to be a priority with some benefit claimants.

I believe Channel 5 goes for the 'lowest common denominator' ie people who are 'milking the system' in their Benefits series.

If they showed the other side of the fence people would feel differently, lots of people existing on the basic amount and not borrowing or getting stuff from the likes of Brighthouse you would get a very different picture.

I don't watch these programmes much as I feel they are heavily biased and don't serve much benefit to either side of the arguement about 'are benefits going to the right people'.

A typical crass program reinforcing the notion that 'benefit claimants' are all milking the system, I too don't watch these propaganda programmes, if others wish to soak up the untruths and inaccuracies, and simple hate crime TV then so be it.

They're not benefits either, it's social security to stop you from going under when life deals you a bad hand, something which we ALL pay for, just be thankful you're not one of the unfortunate ones who has to justify their illness/disability to unqualified automatons who have a magic wand and can cure you of your ills in less than an hour!

Who ever heard of someone getting a job at the Jobcentre? The unemployed are sent there as penance for their sins, not to help them find work!

I wish they could cure my dodgy neck in an hour, hurts to eat today. I've got four collapsed vertebrae and a couple of bulging discs - makes it very difficult at times to manage ordinary things.

These benefits shows should be stopped - I think they are beginning to run out of themes for them.

Quite agree, but there are those out there who simply exist in order to make money out of others misery, and all the while the gullible continue to soak it all up, the government will continue to allow the divisive hate crimes to continue.

I reported my council leader to the police for her comments in the local rag about a claimant in Portsmouth who had bought himself a 1700£ TV, and that ''This is the reason why the country has a deficit'', no idea what came of it, if anything, I doubt it, but the next time I see her when she gallivants around parading for the media in her 'support' of the armed forces, she'll know just how vile and odious I think of her.

Isn't Channel the only channel still dragging out the waste of space house reality reality shows which demonstrates the mental capacity of the producer!
