hi, if one was to sell some old clothes on ebay, would the income have to be reported to jobcentre etc, in regards to JSA or ESA or DLA, housing benefit.

thankyou

once recieved cold weather payments, and when i reported, jobcenter said no need to as its one off small payment, not a change in income. Similar situation to above?

If you sell some of your own property on ebay, that's not a problem and there's no need to report it.

It would be different if you were buying stuff and reselling for profit (ie running a business) but just selling off some old personal possessions that you don't want any more is fine.

Sorry for the bump but how sure are you of this?

Unless you are a self employed ebayer, you can sell your own property as you wish, it would be no different to going to say a CEX store and selling an electrical item. Only difference is ebay is more traceable.

As antone says, if its just personal items it's fine. I think it may be in one of the DMG's but unsure as it wasn't around when they where drafted.

If in doubt one could always ring the DWP for advice.

Thanks for the response. I'll probably be posting a thread soon regarding an ESA benefit.

What is DMG?

Also do you think there would be a limit where it doesn't matter if it's your own property, the amount of sales would make it self employment and then problematic?

Also what about bet winnings? Not a regular occurance, and some bets lost. But maybe three or four bet wins.

DMG is the Decision Makers Guide. It's a set of reference manuals used by benefit staff when deciding who can get benefit and how the amount is worked out.

As far as I can recall, gambling winnings would be classed as capital (in effect, savings) when calculating benefits.

It is NOT income so shouldnt be assessed as such. It is not a business either, same with gambling. The only thing you may fall foul of is the limits on capital and that is unlikey. Let us assume you sell some clothes, you are always going to need new ones so no need to account for the money. If you sold an expensive car and were going to buy another one then the capital limits should be ignored as long as the money is spent almost immediately but often the powers that be get this wrong so the answer to that is dont tell them about the sale and purchase
