Job interview 6 Feb 13 - Huddersfield

Offered job

Contacted DWP and LA for help with removal costs from Darlington (90 miles and l have no transport at the mo)

Budgetting Loan - not eligible (unemployed less than 26 weeks)

Crisis Loan - doesn't meet criteria

Discretionary Housing Payment - not provided for removals

Asked DWP what would happen if I turn job down (which I dont want to do)

Answer was I ''probably" wouldn't be sanctioned but that was up to the decision maker!

Assistance from ex forces charities will take a few weeks!

Is the job within your "Travel to Work Area" as defined by the DWP? This is typically set as either 60 or 90 minutes travelling time by your usual method of transport (that is, by car if you have one, by realistically available public transport if you don't). Ninety miles sounds like it's probably outside of this area, and as such you should not be sanctioned for turning down a job that you can't get to without huge expense and inconvenience.

I understand that you want to take the job, so ultimately it's up to you. I can't think of any other help that would be available - you've already tried everything I would have suggested.

spareroom has flatshares from £60pw no deposit - I expect they are manky but won't kill you

Couchsurfing also has a few places

If it is a "quality" job I say flog the TV down cash convertors and go for it. I wouldn't for NMW though!

Never assume anyone on the internet is who they say they are. Only rely on advice from insured professionals you have paid for!

Thanks.

Currently applying for a ''bad credit'' loan to cover initial costs (reluctantly but can't face weeks on benefits looking for the 'perfect' job!)

have you tried actually asking your bank? If you have a letter from forces charity saying grant en route and a contract in your hand they may help. Probably not if you are in payday loan land though!

Found a 'property guardian' house share. Trying to get money to cover initial costs now. Will mean leaving wife behind in current rental until get sorted!

(£9/hour min 38 hours so worth going for I think)

Hi DaveIves,

hope it all pans out OK. Could the Jobcentre help with a quick payment? They are meant to fund claimants costs for certain things, such as travel costs, in order to 'remove barriers to employment'.

Other than that I can only think of suggesting aa approach to the nearest branch of the Royal British Legion.

All the best.

Update

Accepted job.

DWP unbudging re 6 months qualification criteria for budgetting loan! :deadhorse:

Discussion via local MP led to them offering "to pay for travel down to start work" (a one-way ticket!). MP to floor a question to DWP minister although any resolution will be too late for me!!

Local Authority no help with Discretionary Housing Payment. :frusty:

Had interview with RBL - will take a little time to assess

Only solution was two payday loans and bad creditor credit card.

I move on Thursday (via sparerooms.com- thanks emmzi - much better than the guardian place) and will have to wait to move wife down when more funds available :ohwell:

Thanks to everyone for their input and suggestions. :yo:

  • 1 month later...

Well update!

Now been in work since end Feb.

Managing the payday loans just but should be clear of them by end of May.

Found a property and British Legion/RNBF helping with bond, first months rent and removal costs - big help.

(Only criteria for help was that property rent must not exceed LHA for area - difficult with two dogs (!) but doable)

Thanks to those above for help and suggestions
