Have you ever had a direct debit become due or a cheque presented to your account when the money you relied on to meet it was a day late being deposited? The bank bounces the cheque of refuses the direct debit and the money appears in the account the nexy day. You are then left with sorting out the payment as well as paying bank charges.

I think banks should automatically hold such requests for money for 24 hours, not paying them out if the money is not there - that would be unreasonable, but simply holding on to the request for 24 hours (may be 48?) so that if the money comes in, the request can be met.

It is not a responsible way to manage an account to sign cheques for money you know will not be there, I do not suggest this for such a practice. It is just to help out customers who are genuinely caught out by late payments from others, and do not have an overdraft facility.
