My daughter is insured with Direct Line, and about 2 years ago had to make a major claim for storm damage to the roof. Direct Line appointed their contractors, job was done.

Last year, during heavy rain, she noticed water pouring into her son's bedroom, and down came the ceiling. Luckily, her 2 yr old was not in his bed!

Direct Line appoint a claim manager, who just happens to be a roofing specialist. He checks the job and is horrified by what he has seen, and checks the job sheet of the previous contractors, who have claimed for much more work than they have done, and left the roof in a mess.

Upon further investigation, it turns out that one of DL's internal people has been dishing out work to "dodgy" roofers for a kickback.. can't be proved because computer records have.. ahem.. gone missing!

Anyhow work done, but premiums have gone through the room (no pun intended) as there are two major claims, including the dodgy amount! So, she can't take her business elsewhere.

Last week, ceiling in her bathroom falls in, caused by badly installed insulation (by the first contractor) who had dislodged a tank overflow.

Onbudsman's office involved, but they can't find a burden of proof.

Let me see... Direct Line.. is that now RBS?

Any other horror stories of a similar ilk?

RBS have always had DL,among others:),find it hard to believe that records have gone missing as there is also a paper trail with claims:D

polite way of saying we dont want a scandal etc, seen loads, all brushed under the carpet.

If their records have gone missing then I would ask them why your premium has gone up. They must have no records of your previous claims then so how can they increase the premium!

Also isn't there a form you can send them ordering them to divulge all information they have on you. Forgotten what it's called but no doubt another cagger will be able to name it.
