Right, where to start.

We have arrears for council tax from 2006 to the tune of £1409.76.

Jacobs were orriginally collecting an extortionate amount of £300 a month until we simply could not afford any more, thankfully it turned out that the levy they had on our property was invalid as they did it in my name and the bill was in my boyfriends name.

Now a commital summons has come through the door..

Our council have applied that the defendant be committed to prison in the respect of the outstanding sum.

What do we do? We are happy to come to an arrangement and pay it off, it's not a refusal to pay.

You can take an expenditure sheet with you to court and show the judge that they are being unfair and you just cannot afford that amount.

Just because you have a summons doesn't mean that you will be committed.

Please make sure you attend or they may committ in your absence. Take an income and expenditure sheet with you and a proposal for payment that you are certain you can stick to.

Good luck.

It was the local authority. The annoying thing was that hubby could not get time off from work to attend, I was not permitted to so he sent in a letter making an offer with an expenditure sheet attached and also pre empted the council in question that he was unable to attend. That was over a week ago and we have not heard a thing and are waiting anxiously for the outcome.
