I handed my notice in on the 4th of september to the company i worked for, and according to my contract i would have to work 9 weeks notice because it is a week for every year i have worked for then, when writing my letter i stated i would work my notice but if they could let me know how long this would be as i was unsure. They replied saying they accept my resignation with immediate effect does this mean i will be paid my notice as i am unsure

No, they have to pay you.

Notice is a contract binding on both sides. As long as you are willing to work your notice, but the employer requires you to leave immediately then you are effectively suspended on full pay until your notice period expires.

If you break the contract by leaving immediately, your employer does not have to pay you.

In some industries it is standard practice to place people on paid 'gardening leave' for several months so that they cannot take any up-to-date information to a competitor.

remember that in addition to notice you are also entitled to pay from any holiday entitlement that you've yet to use up.

I've become addicted to green blobs (I have 2 now) so feel free to tip my scales if I ever make sense.;-)
