Default getting my bond back

we have recently vacated a rented house and the landlord is stalling on giving us the bond back. he claims that we need to pay to have the carpet professionallycleand, even though by his own admission he didnt have it cleaned before we moved in and even apologised for the state of it when we moved in. he wants us to replace 16 kitchen door knobs as two are missing - bearing in mind they are ancient and were falling off when we moved in - what can we do?
