In 2004, when we were planning our move from the UK for our new life here in the USA we thought that we had everthing covered but then a few things happened which have largely led to the position we are in now with lovely DCAs like AIC chasing us.
First, the housing market collapsed in the UK and this left us needing to accept a lower offer on our home. Then, two months before we were to leave I had a minor heart attack and was told not to return to teaching - which I had planned to do to supplement our business income in the USA. So we arrived in the USA with less money than we had anticipated and with a reduced income.
These are things that can happen to anyone I guess but we were trying to keep UK creditors happy and we have managed to do that for sometime with regular payments, plus we paid off a large amount of debt when I inherited some money early in 2007.
The economic bubble has burst here in the USA and everywhere else it seems and we decided to negotiate reduced settlements with our creditors except LLOYDS TSB and RBS would not play at all!
Thank goodness we discovered this website - it has lifted a big grey cloud just knowing that we are not alone and that there are ways of dealing with debt collector thugs and their threats....now I need to get into finding some guidance for our particular situation...looks like we should start with a CCA letter?....hey, take care
