Can somebody out there help me?
I have been with the Nat West for 16 years. I am 32 years old. In March 2006 I decided to open a savings account with HSBC. They 'kind of' forced me into applying for a credit card as well. A week later I received a rejection letter from HSBC stating thay were refusing me, my credit score was OK but info from a licensed reference agency caused them to reject my application. I duly applied for my credit reference from Experian and read that 2 entries had been made by HSBC claiming 'material falsehoods in the personal info provided - refer to CIFAS'. Having just moved from one rented accommodation to another I (foolishly)thought that this must be down to not being registered on the electoral roll so I registered and thought that was that. About 4 months ago, I decided to obtain a small so I went back to the Nat West and felt comfortable with them. The Nat West refused me funding 'cause, they stated 'I had been bankrupt' all because of HSBC entry almost a year ealier in Experian. Please note that I have never made material falsehoods or been bankrupt. Now after 4 months of 'phone calls, letter writing etc (HSBC fraud dept do not take incoming calls) I wrote to them contesting the entry. Almost the next day I received a 'phone call from HSBC fraud Dept saying 'they had no record of this CIFAS business and to contact Experian again to get a fresh report. I again contacted Experian and my latest record shows no entry at all about material falsehoods, bankruptcy - nothing-. Surely they should at least apologize and I should be compensated for their libelous statement, being defamed and all the time and trouble with taking time off work, worry, stress etc that they have caused. What is the best way to go about this?

To be perfectly honest this is quite amazing and for a moment I thought Beadle was about to jump out from the Cag canteen.
Lets take it one step at a time so you are 32........nothing wrong with this I remember being 32 and feeling much younger......ahem (cough)
No one can be "Forced" into taking out a credit card app
unless they came around with the shotgun or tickets for the forthcoming Spice girls concert.......in which case you would probably submit
Joking aside......Experian have a duty to hold accurate info and you should question anything that isnt
unfortunately they are beginning to realise that our members know that their services are not statute law and that its purely a commercial organisation.
They will know your history from former address etc.
They collect that info in the main by date of birth and n ame

You have your work cut out here,but from what you say then things can be sorted in your favour.

My first inclination is to write to Experian asking them to explain the events and provide full details to you of who gave what information, when it was removed and why. I wonder if a Subject Access Request would be appropriate here - anyone any thoughts? Ask for all historical data.
