dealer won't send correct number plate

can anyone tell me whether i have any rights on this .... i recently bought a second hand car from what seemed to be a reputable dealer, (gave free 12 months warranty and everything!) but after a week or so i realised the last letter on the number plate was incorrect ! as the garage made their own number plates it seemed to be a simple mistake and they told me they'd send the correct number plates out asap......... 1 month on and several phone calls and 1 letter later they still havn't sent them ! should i just give up and get some made myself ? or should i demand they fix this problem ? any advice would be appreciated. thanx.

Have you had the V5 back from the DVLA with your name on it as RK yet? Without it, you cannot get plates made.

If you are driving the car with the incorrect registration number on it, you are committing a criminal offence. If the number is valid and lawfully issued to another vehicle, you have effectively cloned it.

The dealer has effectively sold you an unroadworthy vehicle since it cannot be legally driven on the highway. Write to them and give then 48 hours to provide the correct plates; copy your letter to trading standards.

Yes i got the V5 back last week, so could go and get the correct plates made myself ........... but i feel "why should i pay for them !" especially as the garage has promised to send the number plates several times. it makes me wonder whether they are a trustworthy company and whether my 12 months warranty is actually worth anything ! whats gonna happen if something really goes wrong if they can't even sort this little problem out !

p.s. what exactly should i have recieved as proof of my warranty? all i got was a photo copy of a page out of a waranty book, nothing to say what it covered or any terms of the waranty etc... thought the bloke said all it covered was engine and gearbox. does this sound legit ?

A trader does not have to provide a warranty at all, and any that he does provide can have whatever terms and conditions they want in them.

Warranties are in addition to your statutory rights (under the Sale of Goods Act, unless you have bought on HP).
