Direct auto finance / yes car credit

Hi not sure if anyone can help me but I had a car from yes car credit through Direct Auto Finance in 2003 (seems I made a big mistake). Having gone through a divorce the car went back 2005. The finance was in joint names.
Ihave had a read around on here and I might have got it wrong but am I right in thinking that after half of the total balance has been paid the car can be returned so the payments can cease?
If this is the case can I claim any money back?
The remaining balance at the time when the car was given back was almost £6000 out of a total of £9000 and I was told to pay £3000 and my ex wife would be chased for the other £3000.
As I have paid more than half of the remaining balance can I reclaim any of that money?
