Re: Handbrake failure In my past I have been a motor mechanic, trained by the RAF, and I can tell you that this sort of thing is common with rear disc brakes. Disc brakes are not really suitable for parking as they do not have a self servo effect as drum brakes do. Having said that the front drum brakes only have self servo going forward, as they have two leading shoes, and it is only from leading shoes that you get the self servo effect, and this is the reason that the rear brake have leading and trailing brake shoes as this gives self servo in both directions.
Original Minis had their hand brake working the front wheels and for this reason early Minis had atrocious braking. They had leading and trailing shoes on the front brakes. I know I crash an RAF Mini.
It has always been known that disc brakes are not effective as hand brakes and this is why some vehicles have a transmission brake for parking.
