Default Renault Clio - Stalling anyone?

I am seeking to take Renault to task over their stalling clios. I have a Y reg one that stalls at traffic and they want 1200 to fix it!

Problem is it only did 29k when this started and a lot of people have had the same problem.

Are you one of them?

hey tbecket, no expert here and not sure if its the same but...... had same trouble on my omega irratic idle stalling etc turn out was idle control valve and less than £100 plus fitting but i was even able to take off the iddle control valve and soak it overnight in petrol dry it completely and refit cured problem(advised by a nice vaux mechanic hehe). maybe worth popping along to your local renualt garage and looking for a fitter outside on dinner maybe and see if same applies to renault cars. not quite the answer your looking for but may help with the stalling anyway

I bought a R reg Clio ( the old model ) in March this year, Great little runner, however have noticed in the recent warm weather, that the little minx does stall at times, i put this down to myself not controlling the revs and clutch good enough, my partner does'nt have the same problem with the Escort. nor do i when i borrow it, i have also noticed that when i 1st use the car in the morning, the 1st time i brake, i hear a slight scraping noise, this i have had checked at kwik fit, and i'm assured nothing is wrong with the brakes etc. another thing that bafflied me. but all said and done, i find the clio a great little car, great for the city where i live and good on fuel consumtion.. Keep hold of the car, as it wont lose much in value.

Hi - did you buy the car new or second hand?
If second hand, the responsibility lies with the vendor....(actually, it does if new too, but if bought new Renault will take more interest).
The things Renault will look for are:
  • Was the car purchased new, from a renault dealer?
  • Has the car got a full renault service history?
If the answer to these are yes, then Renault will consider a gesture of goodwill towards repair, depending on mileage.

Call em on 08000 72 33 72.........

I'd look in the yellow pages for a good garage locally who can do diagnostics if they are clued up they should be able to find the problem a lot cheaper than renault. Many modern cars suffer from seemingly complicated problems which do require expensive equipment to diagnoise but unlike in the early days garages are realising there is a good deal of money to be made from this (as are some dealers such as volvo but that's a different story) and investing heavily in the technology.

This is perfectly normal for disc brakes.

What happens is as the brakes cool in the evening, they attract condensation and this will form very, very slight surface rust on the disk overnight. The first application of brakes in the moring will clean this off.

It is also quite normal for there to be a noise if you brake very gently with disk as the disks drag across the pads and vibrate.

noise should not be heard from brakes although many noises have no effect on effeciancy or safety
squeeling can worn pads, cheap nasty pads, excessive rust on discs, or glazed surface on the discs

but any noise should be regarded as abnormal and should be checked although like i said maybe perfectly ok to drive

rust build up can appaer on worn disks or sticking calipers
if a car is left standing for maybe a week or so it quite normal to hear the surface rust being scapped off on first brake application
if your heariing it every morning then this is not going to be rust built up overnight as thats not enough time for sufficient rust to build up to a pint where it willbe heard

the rear brakes should also be checked incase theres a problem there, sometimes it can be quite decieving as o whether a noise is comig from front or back

also wheel bearing can create a simlar noise they first start showing signs of wear so that should be checked outaswell
normally thoughwheel bearing noise will increase with speed
other times you might only hear a bearing when going round a bend but perfectly silent when driving straight

as for the original thread, low mileage or not its highly unlike renault is going to take responsibilty for the stalling problem
you said the car is a Y reg making it 6 to 7 years old, and they have dont do 7 year warranties
yu could maybe try out recall.net though to see if anythin is listed there for your car becausethats the only way renault would do anything and even then only if there is a recall on it but i dought that your problem would be recalled
normally the only way a car ofthat age is recalled is if the is a serious safety issue has been discovered

cars thes day are considered throw away items like everything else
and only have a realistic life expectancy of 5yrs , after that there pretty much considered old eventhough there not much wrong with most of this age

There should be a law as to where a vehicle is taken off the road after 7-8 years no exceptions allowed. That would reduce the current congestion like nobodys buisiness and is the owner wants to keep the car on th road after 7 years etc then he/she should pay double or even treble road tax.

Not very green though, when you consider the cradle to grave carbon footprint.

As new cars are coming in they should automatically be running on gas/electric. The Diesel and petrols shold be phased out.

Hello no fear i have the answer the renult clio,s suffer from a wiring loom fault where the loom has rubbed through the wiring next to the throttle box its a task of putting a new loom on the ignition side does cost alot but should be covered on waranty if not write to renults dealers saying you had the problem from waranty and they should give sum discount of goodwill. thanks

Ohh also the brakes is nothing its a fast surface rust build up over night by anychance do you live in east anglia as we the sea air has salt in it causing this build up faster than other places. It will almost certainly go after 2-3 times of depressing the pedal if this does not happen i advise taking to a garage for a check.

I really would like this too. You obviously have so much money yourself that you can afford tou buy me and the wife a car each. Might as well buy my fatha one too.

If you don't want to do this, I suggest you either buy me 2 houses, closer to where me and the wife work, or just give us £35k cash per annum.

And by the way, current hybrid cars such as the Honda Inshighte or Toyota Pious are far, far worse on fuel economy than a small-ish petrol or diesel such as the Citroen C2 or Pug 107.

[edited], insulated in your comfy worlds where you can afford a brand new car every 3 years or so, or a shiney house. Some of us don't have this luxury and have to live where we can afford, miles away from scum wagons (public transport), and drive cars several people have owned.

Nee offence like
