Default Scottish Power chasing me! :(

Please help me.

Last academic year I lived in a shared house billed by the above. We had numerous problems with the housemates and I wrote to SP to alert them that one of the housemates had left and the bill that was in his name would need to be changed to the remaining 5 people.

I didnt hear any thing for months after sending the letter, and then 3 days after I moved out I got a letter from them to my home address (which I never supplied them with) saying that I owed them £1000. I had my share of £289 in my bank ready to pay them, but the amount they were billing me (and me solely, none of the other names were on the letter) was for the whole house.

I rang them to explain that I could only pay my share, and that they'd failed to put all the names on the account and they informed me that it was because when I first wrote to them, mine was the only signature on the letter. Apparently in order to get the names ammended I would need a signed declaration from the other housemates (who, because they were all utter bel***ds I no longer spoke to). I'd need to get them to write to SP asking to be billed hundreds of pounds - I had trouble getting them to pay me back the loo roll let alone a massive debt!

SO I wrote one more letter to SP saying that I was able to send a cheque for my exact amount if I got signed confirmation of this before hand, and that I was due to move from the address (no forward address given). They wrote back saying they could not involve themselves in third party disputes and as I was the only one on the letter, I was the only one who owed them.

So this is the situation I am in now. It's 8 months down the line and I'd heard nothing. My dad (at the correspondance address) returned all the SP letters unopened claiming 'not known at this address' and eventually they stopped. Ignorance is bliss, or so I thought.

This morning I woke up to find a text on my phone from BCW Group asking me to call them urgently. When I looked on the internet, it didnt shock me to read that SP is their customer.

What do I do?! They've somehow got my pay and go mobile no, something I never provided them with. They found out my other address (not this one... yet) and I never told them either. My old landlord at the house being billed hates me and will have no problem in helping them find me. I'm living in fear of them tracking me down. I'm a student with hardly any money... I was trying to do the honest thing and pay what I owed and now it looks like I'm going to end up paying the debts for my 5 nasty ex-housemates. I'm utterly depressed about it.
