Default NPower

I recently got a demand from Wescot Credit Services regarding a bill for £251 from NPower. Now I've been with EDF Energy for the past few years, and never changed supplier.
But when I phoned EDF they said I ended my account with them on 15th May 06 for electric and 6th June 06 for Gas. Since then I've heard about a few people who have been moved to Npower without their knowledge!

Also, I moved out of the house in question on 18th June 06 and into a friends house and then another house 17th July in a completely different town and county.

So, my questions are

1. Should I have to pay if I didnt sign up to them
2. I can only prove I moved into my new property 17th July, I have no proof that I actually moved out 18th June, (the closest I can get is 2nd July when my previous council tax bill ended). How do I go about getting the bill split if I do have to pay it?

My ex landlord is of no use, he was a complete PITA about it at the time, and no doubt it was him that used such an excessive amount of fuel!!

Contact them and put the account in dispute as it is an erroneous transfer.

Should I reply to Wescot or directly to Npower, or perhaps both?
(I have no NPower account numbers because I never received any bills, but I do have the Wescot reference number)

Ok I would send Wescot a letter stating account is in dispute so they cannot chase the charges. Then phone Npower up giving the postcode and house number they will provide you with your account number (make sure you get this for future correspondance) Raise the issue of an erroneous transfer with them. Once they say they will do this demand they take the debt back from Wescot as it is in dispute.

Phone Transco - you're not required to pay when the transfer was not requested by you.

I lived in a property for 12 months, 9 of which I was with a subsidary company that I'd never heard of before without my knowledge - paid a fixed DD to the company I wanted to be with and then got a huge bill for the one I'd never heard of before or asked to be moved to.

Phoned Transco (very helpful) who acted as liaison and confirmed the transfer was not made without my consent, and told me not to pay the bills. I got a final demand from this erroneous company, called Transco and within 48hrs got a letter affirming I owed nothing - a pain but 9 months free utilities.

Transco specifically affirmed I was not liable as the transfer was made without my knowledge - but be warned they do investigate well. The only reason this other company knew my meter point reference number (required to transfer service) is because they were a legally owned subsidary of Powergen. Kinda like ATM fraud - always looks iffy.
