Question is my gas meter fiddling me???

i'm with BG. prepayment meter

when i top up my gas i've noticed (especially when i top up after using the £5.00 emergancy credit) that i keep having something come up saying

£20 on card

£5.00 paid back for using emer/credit

36p (or it varies up and down in price) for debt

leaving £14.64 for electic

i've never had a debt with BRITISH GAS. i've only been here 3 yrs and the meters where in here before i moved in.

my electric meter is also BG and that doent charge me????

Sounds like there is an unpaid bill outstanding and it looks likely to originate from the last occupier of your house.

You need to contact your supplier to verify if this is the case then work out what has been overpaid by you to be returned. When you moved in you should have had a new card and the existing meter should have been decommisioned and recommisioned so as to avoid any previous debts owed before you.

No it doesn't. Your meter doesn't collect standing charge while you're in emergency credit, so it collects the outstanding amount from however long you've been in emergency credit the next time you charge your key.

No one is saying it does, what the OP is saying is when they top up they are seeing money being taken for DEBT not just the emergency credit that was used being taken.

They have said they owe no money.

Mree is correct, whilst in emergency it does not collect standing charge. this is accrued untill you top up. so it is taking back the emergency you used and also the build up of standing charge.

If you want to double check if there is a debt on the meter, do the following:

1. Leave your gas card out of the meter
2. Hold the red button until it beeps
3. Keep pressing the red button in until you get to screen 24
4. Insert your gas card fully
5. Press the red button again and reply here with what it says on screens 26 & 27.

I can't remember which one is which since it's been a while since I've worked for Scottish Power, but one is the Debt Recovery Rate (i.e. £5/week), and the other is the total debt on the meter.

I would strongly recommend that anyone who is on a prepayment meter looks at Ebico, they do not use a standing charge for your meter unlike the others. It could potentially save you a lot of cash. Oh and no I don't work for them this is just from personal experience having saved 33% on my first bill.

27 tells you total debt and 25 tells you min collection rate per week and 26 tells you max collection rate per week. 25 and 26 should be same. However this will not work on the new meters.
