Default BG electricity prepay meter mystery debt!

Beware long story coming up lol

I recently moved back in with my elderly mother in May and she was moaning about how much her BG prepay elec meter was costing here now. I asked what she meant and she informed me that since a key update in January everytime she credited her meter it would take a between £2-5 everytime we charged even within the same week for some reason. I assumed this was a debt, but as she had been on prepay for 20 years plus with no arrears and no charge being taken before january i thought this odd. So i checked the screens and it did indeed appear to show a debt of £80 ish and this was in May. The debt/week was showing £5.15. So £5.15ish x 20 or so weeks = a nice little refund or so i thought.....

I promptly assured my mother that this was wrong and should not IMO be taking anything. I rang British Gas and spoke to a young lady, who said we needed to take a meter reading, which she attempted to talk me through but was unable cos the only instructions she knew where for a diffrent meter type. So she arranged for an engineer to call and deal with the situation. which he did within three days. She said the engineer would take the reading and any money then due us. Engineer said we had a really old style meter and he removed and installed a new. So i waited for the refund......

after 5 weeks i rang BG again today to be told they have no record of my claim that there was a debt being taken incorrectly on the meter. I was given a PO box number address and told i would have to write there explaining all the details and they may just look at it. Flabberghasted by this i rang energywatch who passed me through to a customer relations manager, who began the conversation by telling me the account had only been built a couple of weeks ago! (despite being with BG since the 1980's). Then she quickly glossed over this and said there was no credit or debt on the account and flatly denied that there could EVER have been a debt added to the meter. Strange considering moments earlier she had just said the account had only been constructed a few weeks earlier. And of course there was no possibly of an error in thier meters or thier other systems and that i was completely wrong! Guess i was seeing things eh! lol

BG claimed the only charge we would have seen would be a weekly standing charge for the prepay meter, which apparently is higher or lower depending on your Geographical location! She could not however tell me exactly what this stand charge was for my location and why there was no evidence of such a large standing charge since the new meter was installed or before the key update in the new year! She just claimed the new meters charged differently lol.

Bear in mind this was on a BG essentail tarrif dual fuel.

I guess what i would like to know is has anyone else experienced this excuse.

Or does anyone know where i could find out the so called standing charges she claims are for my area?

I am considering ringing Energywatch again tomorrow and i will record any further conversations i have with BG! Funny how they are happy to hound you for money they think u owe them but god forbid anyone dare suggest they have made a mistake and they owe them money!

Any advice on how i can move forward would be greatly appreciated
Many thanks in advance
huge
