Default scottish power

my friend was billed by scottish power £856 for 2 months
her bill states she has used close to 9000 units of electricity in those 2 months which we think is virtually impossible.
her previous bill for 1 month was £107 which she paid
scottish power are demanding she pays the £856 saying thats whats shes used.
she lives in a 5 bedroom house however no one is ever home in the day time. her cooker is gas, her heating is all gas.
is it possible to use this amount of electricity is 2 months?

many thanks

It's probably not 'impossible' but certainly highly unlikely.

Our house of 2 adults and 2 children uses 3780 units in a whole year!

There would clearly appear to be an error and it needs investigating. What, if anything, have Scottish Power said so far?

my friend called them and explained she thinks the amount is incorrect to which they replied you have to pay it and it is correct.
ive advised her to phone them again and ask them to come out and check the meter as it could be faulty.

Scottish Power .... Oh my favourite, well the DCA these people use are at least.

Write a letter of complaint, send it registered post to the REGISTERED OFFICE address, give them 14 days to respond (You won't get any reply as the registered office don't know what to do with post so it seems). Once you have give them 14 days, report them to Ofgem Home giving notice that you have complained and no responce after 14days, they'll ask for the RM recorded delivery number, so have it to hand, they'll then get in touch with Scottish Power and tell them to pull the finger out and sort it in 5days.

I got a nice letter of appology from them and a £20 Argos voucher

May be obvious, but im assuming she has checked the readings and made sure they tally with the meter? Also, if they do tally, may be worth checking that she hasnt left something like the emersion on all that time? Just a thought as a customer I spoke to recently didnt realise, but they had been away for 3 months, came back and found that their son had left it on 24 hours a day for that period hence a huge bill.

Unhappy Re: scottish power

I'm currently having the same problem only with Scottish gas I transfered to them and for 1 months worth of gas they say i owe them £1014.51 with my previous supplier i was about £80 a month neadless to say i quickly changed back. I have phoned scottish gas and they themselves admitted there was no way i could use that much gas in a month and the account has been suspended but nobody seems to be doing anything about it. Not sure what to do now any ideas?

Hi Morganpink08
welcome to the list of people with a grievance with Scottish Power.

Does your friend have a normal supply or Economy 7 supply?
I am in dispute with Scottish Power over a faulty Economy 7 Clock in the main supply box next to the meter. They replaced both the clock - it was 2 1/2 hrs slow! and the meter.

Has your friends readings been read or estimated?

Good luck
