Default EON threatening to cut me off...

Hi, I have been in a rented apartment for 15 months with a friend. We didn't recieve an electricity bill for the 1st 6 months as they were being sent to the wrong address, when we did receive one it was for ~£500. Now my flatmate was responsible for paying the electricity bills, however I found out hes not been paying them.

So, as it stands we owe EON £1000, we have been paying £100/month and will continue to do this, we have no way of paying off the balance in full, but I today called EON and they said unless it is paid off in full, they will disconnect our supply next week (they cant install a prepayment meter due to some agreement with the apartments).

Can they do this? Like I said it is impossible to pay the balance, and we can't afford more than £100/month to repay....

Many Thanks

AJ

I dont think they are allowed to do this. Are the apartments all electric? if so and there are people living there they are not allowed to leave you without a supply. Make sure they are aware that a pre-payment meter cant be installed. If they give you grief next time, ask to speak to a manager.

Sorry Mrs Ryan, but I am afraid you are wrong. If they cannot fit a Pre-Payment Meter and there are no children or O.A.P.s in the property they can disconnect the supply, however ajwales we need to backtrack.
For E.on to disconnect they need a warrant from the local Magistrates Court. To apply for a Warrant they must notify you at least 14 days before the court date of their planned action, which gives you the chance to object in court. From what you have said if you attended court and objected it is unlikely the Magistrates would grant the warrant.
If however they have already been to court, my advice would be to talk to Energy Watch which should hold any action and is likely that a resolution would be found
