Hello,

As its rented you have to ask your landlord if he will have the meters changed so you can pay by direct debit. If this is a private rental, credit checks would already have taken place and may allay any fears the landlord might have in allowing the meters to be changed to normal ones.

Ask him and see what happens is my advice but I don't know if you can actually change the meters without his permission.

Can't the supplier set rates to zero so that it functions as a normal meter

Unfortunately, the meter would have to be changed, but as far as I know the landlord can't legally stop you getting the meter changed. When you move out, he can get the supplier to change it back again if he wants to when he calls to change the name on the account, and they shouldn't charge him for this.

Mree is correct, unless stated in the contract that you signed the meters can be changed without his permission as you have a right to choose how you pay for your supply. again meter will have to be changed.
