British Gas Charges - Annoying!

Hello All,

I have had continous problems paying my utility bills over the last 18 months and accrued quite a few charges. I am now up todate with my British Gas (electricity) account except I deducted £64 in charges from my last payment in February. I am loathe to pay these charges.

I received an overdue legal action letter dated 03/03/08 for the £64 in question so I called them on the 09/03/08 and the office was closed and I could not log onto their website (again).

They have now sent me another letter dated 10/03/08 (rec'd today 20/03/0 for £78 and advising they have charged me another £14!

Can I do anything except pay the £78 (or is it now £92) as the letter is not very clear. They really are a bunch of toskers!

Ideally I would like them to shove their charges where the sun does not shine and change supplier.

late payment - mainly on estimated bills!. At one stage the account was £700+ but then in credit when I supplied a reading.
I would seriously advise anyone with an estimated bill to check their meter.

Ok I have read some of the threads on this GREAT website and took the following action:

1. Calculated that I had £170 of charges applied since late 2006
2. Called Energywatch to complain on 0845 9 06 07 08
3. They gave me a reference number and put me through to British Gas
4. BG refunded me £106 because I could not log onto their website to pay my account (as a gesture of goodwill)
5. I have accepted this refund but not agreed it as final settlement
6. BG advised me their charges are legal

The question is are they?

Hi All,

Ok I have got on-line access to my BG account and it confirms I have a credit balance of £14 after the £106 refund, but the account history does not show an actual refund at present. I am waiting for my next bill, which will be an estimate as they have not read the meter for sometime.

I will check the estimate against the actual and adjust accordingly before pursuing the other £64.00 they have charged me in charges.

The question is are these charges legal????

Who can say when the gas useage took place and amounts became due? I have a credit balance due to a partial refund of their charges and have a credited balance when the meter was last read. Money makes money!

Any help on the legality of these charges (£14 per letter etc) would be most welcomed.

What do they state the £14 letter charge is for? Sorry for asking, but I am unsure.
