Default British Gas - not willing to except my offer to clear my debt ? any advice please

Hi all,

I have an outstanding Bill of £600 with BG, firstly i honestly dont be believe the bill is right. and 2nd there is no way i can pay it off in one lump sum. therefore i wrote and offered to pay £40 per month advising any more would cause me real hardship. there have written back to advise they are not willing to accept it to be paid in monthly payments and require it to be paaid in full in 7 days or they will get a warrant out to me. i rent a property so can not have a pre paid meter. does anyone know what my next step could be ?

thanks

ps this website is the best site i have ever found !!!!!

off the top of my head, I dont think that there is much to do... You need to supply them with incomming and outgoings to prove that you can only affford the amount that you are are paying

Check the meter readings on the bill against the meter to make sure they are correct. If the meter readings on the bill are estimated give BG the actual reading and they will recalculate the bill

Is this all from one bill or several bills that haven't been paid?

How long a period oes the bill cover?

Are either of the readings estimates? If the current reading is an estimate, how far out is it?

What is the meter reading / estimate date?

I have had major problems with BG. They kept saying that they couldnt read the meter as no one was home but its in a box in the wall by front door. Next excuse was that it wasnt my meter. Finally got meter man to pull company fuse and decide yes its yours and ended up with a bill for over £500. Managed to get them to agree to payment in installments, but it had to be a figure that they chose not what I could afford, since then I have also had threatening letters without having a bill first and letters telling me I hadnt paid an installment until I offer to fax the receipt to them.

If they had to do that to confirm it was your meter, which meter were they reading before?

start paying them the £40 per month regardless if they accept it or not, at least you are showing you are trying to clear the debt, don't just wait for them to accept it or issue you with legal difficulties.
I've got the same problem with yorkshire water, and although it is'nt wiping the debt out overnight, it's a show from me that I want to clear it BUT NOT at a crippling amount they are TELLING me I have to pay!!

Good luck with your battle

stay fresh peeps

regards
chris
