EDF - Need your opinion

Hi all,

I have just discovered that I have been paying my neighbour’s electricity for over 3 years now. Namely, my electricity meter is located in the communal corridor together with meters for 2 other apartments and I discovered recently by pure chance that the meters were incorrectly labelled when they were installed and therefore I was paying someone else’s electricity as well as that someone else has been paying mine... I had my friend who is an electrician confirm this and now edf are sending someone next week to run tests and confirm for sure...

If it appears that this is the case, what should I do? Should i just continue paying new bills after they have amended records on their system or should I dispute this and ask for some refund as I was paying for something else?

Your help would be appreciated!

It really depends on whether you were paying too much or not, both sets of bills for the period would have to be made available and compared.

If it shows that your own bills were lower than those you were paying, I would think that at the very least a refund of the difference would be due.

obviously the opposite would be true, but as it was their mistake, I would think you would have some grounds for complaint.

The meter reading when you moved in would be wrong, and impossible to guess accurately.

If your new bill is higher I would argue that if you had been getting higher bills then you would have cut back your energy useage, so they should give a discount / write off the difference

There might be difficulties if you are with different providers or if the owner of the other flat changed in timescale.

If they try to estimate your usage over the 3 years by using a sample month, remember that usage varies by time of year and by year - how cold the winter is, how dull the summer is, how much you go out etc.

In other words, don't neccessarily accept their first (or even second) bill.

If you do dispute the bills, even if you do it by phone (possibly a good idea so that you can discuss it) confirm it in writing.
