If the providers knew about wholesale price rises, they could prepare for it by advance purchasing energy and warning their customers - but the electricity market is dependent not just on wholesale prices, but the weather, security of supply and the gas prices- which as we all know have experienced of late sharp rises due to rising reliance on importation.
The best thing SMEs can do is shop around for the best deals and be energy effecient. You don't have to spend thousands on energy efficient equipment, just be smart about the way you use the electricity your business pays for.
