Default I can't afford to pay Scottish Power

Hi,

I currently owe Scottish Power £400 and have now received a letter from SPM Collections saying that they are going to send their representative round to my house to collect the debt.

I cannot afford to pay this amount in one go and don't know whats the best way to handle it.

Does anyone know of a standard letter that I could use to explain I can't pay and offer them monthly payments?

Ring them up and offer to pay in x number of monthly installments. I have done this once or twice when I moved house and was faced with a final large bill that I couldnt afford to pay all at once. Of course, if you have already set up a repayment arrangement with them and have broken it then thats a different story.....

Well there isn't anything really - I assume you agree you owe the money? Unless you have a lump sum then other way is there than instalments?
If you are still with them then you could have a key meter installed set to take the amount you offer to pay each week, but using fuel like this usually works out more expensive.

Gizmo is right.

I often install Key Meters for various Utility companies with payback as low as £3.00 per week.

The unit rates and meter rental may be dearer, but at least your debt will be paid off eventually.
