Angry Powergen Problems

We have been with Powergen for seven years on a pre payment meter.
I phoned up this evening to get a new card as the old one was getting worn. The lady informed me that we owed just over £500!!!!
We have not had a bill since March 2005 but the meter is read on a regular basis.
I just presumed being on a prepay meter that everything was okay. But I was told that there should have been two changes made to the meter in the last year to increase cost.
The lady tried to put me through to their arrears dept "to sort it out".
Where do I stand legaly?
Can they make me pay for their mistakes for not changing the tarrif? Also they want to come on Tuesday and put a key meter in (taking any credit left to pay the arrears and having to go and get more credit for the new one), should I let them or make them wait until this arrears is sorted.

Personally i would have thought that the whole idea of a prepayment meter (whether it card or key) is that you pay for your electricity beforehand, therefore logic dictates that you cannot get into arrears!

I would suggest writing to them stating that was their responsibility to update their meter, and that as the whole concept of pre-payment is just that, therefore any arrears due to the meter not being updated is their error and therefore not something that you should be paying for.

I am having similar problems with powergen

Been with them for last 5 years, and have been getting estimated bills despite constant phone calls and attempts to get meeter read at either a weekend or evening time which they said they would do, and sending them my own meter readings

paid the esitmated bills on time, got a bill today for £2,680, which was supposed to be a catch up bill, powergen have gone back to 2003 and sent me a bill for what gas they have considered I have used since then ,

I ma not paying this bill and taking this issues up with powergen and will be certainly making a complaint, there service is a joke

I work for E.ON (Powergen) and deal with outstanding debts on PPMs (Pre-payment Meters). I can make several suggestions. There are numerous reasons why a PPM account will be in debt. If you message me personally I can offer help and advice on a personal level if you like.

This is the direct problem with PPm meters,, and why 3 of the top suppliers have been Directly accused of bad business by energywatch, Scottish Power Npower and Powergen have all been accused of back charging PPm customers because they cant get to all the meters in time to keep up with the price shennaigans they all play.

Thank you for this thread, I signed on the doorstep today with this company , and that is something i usually refuse to do..

This is back pay for changing unit costs of your supply over the year or 2.
i have been searching the net today regarding company's and 4 main suppliers have agreed not to do this reclaiming losses anymore and powergen are not one of them.

I will cancel my agreement asap.

Fuzzy.

don't pay anything! checkout my thread about Powergen, they are trying it on all the time. We still haven't heard anything back from them after 2 months and they said they would ring back the next day! They don't know why we owe it or what amount we actually owe! Every time we speak to someone it differs and then we get a court action letter for a different amount! We have had a debt collection company letter as well for a different amount again. Take a look at my thread and judge Powergen for yourselves!
