Welcome to the site.
Your proof of posting it was your proof of sending it back to them.If you cannot prove this then I think you may have a job on your hands,it then becomes a matter of them taking your word for it,which as looks the case they are not prepared to do.
I will move your post to the Telecoms threads not really anticipating that anyone can really offer a solution here, but moreso to see if this is something that happens a lot/other users have had experience with.

Martin is correct, your RD slip was proof - or if you still know the number, can check when it was delivered. As you'll find, NEVER trust anyone without cause, and mobile phone company returns need to be acknowledged by them before any proof it disposed of.

Anyway, taking 10 months to complain is a bit much, so your response should be that you DID return the phone and kept the receipt for six months (which is more than reasonable). After this the receipt was disposed of. They are being unreasonable in waiting almost a year to query it, so take that tack, and you might be OK.

thanks for the advice. this is my arguement. that if they had of come back to me within 6 months then i would of had the slip. but i moved house a few months back and i know i didn't keep it. we'll have to wait and see what they decide to do.
i'll keep you all posted
