Default Quick resolution sought with NTL

NTL claim there is £42 outstanding. This consists of 3x£10 late fee and 3x£4 "handling fee". Customer services didn't want to know. Supervisor didn't want to know. Billing didn't want to know, and even refused to escalate to their supervisor. Retentions couldn't do anything, refused the advance credit even after I told them I was aware of the on-going deal, and would meet the conditions for it. They were able to make me a reduced rate on services, but this cannot take effect until the account shows no arrears.

Doing this the strictly orthodox way results in two possible scenarios:

1. I refuse to pay the fees, they keep racking them up, and I am without phone and TV (but only technically - they tell me they have cut my phone off, yet it works perfectly well) until this is sorted, which if it involves a court will take forever. Unacceptable.

2. I give NTL an interest-free loan of what could be anything up to £100 in the long term, which I then have to spend another £50 recovering from them, again via the courts. Also unacceptable.

Tomorrow, I will be calling HO (either the switchboard, or the number here on the forum), and am seeking ideas on suitable threats/incentives to wave in front of them. If it comes to having to visit them in person, then so be it (I'll insist they pay for that too).

BTDT. Are you sure the phone line is working. You get dial tone but if you dial any number you get N/u.

What are you trying to achieve? End your association, or simply get the unfair charges back and continue as a customer? If the latter, then you need to agree all your contracted charges, and pay them (although this might not get your services connected). WRITE to the Wythenshaw (Manchester) Customer Services department explaining that if these penalty charges are not credited to your account, you will consider suing them for this amountm and the can subsequently credit THIS to your account as payment.

You'll only get a positive response this way, telephone staff are not prepared to do this on their own.

Phone line is definitely working. I've made plenty of calls in the last few days. Just to make sure, I tried the number listed in this forum earlier today - her voicemail greeting says she's out of the office until Tuesday.

As I have said, I am not willing to extend an interest-free loan to NTL. I have already gone through my bills, calculated the service charges and paid them. The entire amount of the "arrears" is the £14/month (soon to be £15) in penalties, and nothing more.

What about the lovely young lady whose details are posted here? I have given thought to paying HO a visit in person to sort this out.

the head office is just off the m3 near hook in hampshire. the ceo name is simon duffy, he parks his car outside the main building its a black bentley reg no "SD 1". A word of warning your wasting your time. Pay up and make sure you tell them you are paying under protest, keep copies of everything and issue a claim using mcol. If you do anything that looks like anger it will backfire. I use a highlighter pen and write paid under protest on the cheque. Why sue ??? its difficult to ignore a summons besides which their legal team will settle it eventually. NTL are pants I know but just write them off as a bad job. If you don,t get too greedy they will probably pay the claim, put in for some modest expenses on the mcol.

Joking aside, it's only an interest-free loan until you get it sorted, and you're in a good position to turn it to your advantage with 3 or 6 month's free services to bring you back on tracy. Visiting the HQ will achieve nothing as it is not customer facing. (I've just done this to eBay, and I'll write this up shortly).

IT might net me 3-6 months of free service, but I am moving out of my current address in 5, and if it needs to go to court it will undoubtedly take most of this. In the meantime I will still be (mostly) without the service that I have already paid for and will continue to be billed for.
