New Scam: Premium Message Retrieval The latest money-making ruse to make dosh from unwary mobile users (prepay and contract) is to send them an SMS (text) message, saying that a voicemail message awaits you. The message contains the number to collect the message which, surprise surprise, is an 0900 premium number, but disguised in the international dialling format ( +4490xxxx etc) which helps hide the true nature of the number. Because many phones have software which identify phone numbers within messages, it just takes a button press to dial the number and then be charged the appropriate cost for the premium rated call.
This scam affects all customers on all networks, but if you have premium rate call barring on your mobile, the call will be stopped before it connects.
First reports of the message started arriving during the first week of January and the SMS texts appear to be gathering momentum.
