Default 0800 reverse

Unbelievable! I get a bill from BT last August that includes the sum of £38 for calls made to my number using 0800 reverse. It costs about £8000 a second to use this service. I phoned BT and told them that I had not authorized this service. BT told me "you need to speak to 0800 reverse" "No I don't" said I, " I don't have a contract with 0800 reverse and they have not sent me a bill, you have"! I may as well have been banging my head on the fridge so I paid the bill minus the £38. I get my next bill and not only have they slapped on the 38 quid but also another fiver late payment charge. I phone again. Again they tell me to take it up with these clowns at 0800 reverse. "You need to opt out of this service if you don't want it" BT tells me. " I never opted in in the first place"!! says I.
Later that day I get a call from 0800 reverse. "What do you want" asks the rather brusque antipodean lady. " I don't know" I said, "you are phoning me". "Well, if you don't want to speak to us goodbye".
Okay, so I argue with BT, I get a restricted service. I phone BT offering to pay the remainder of the bill while we 'sort out' the disputed charges. "No" they say pay it all or we won't accept any payment!
I get cut off.
I apply for phone and broadband with Pipex. Not a problem. BT cannot refuse the line in an attempt to secure payment from you.
Wrong.
I have no phone and expect broadband will disappear soon.
I HATE CORPORATE FASCISTS!!!!!!!!!

Check the Terms & Confitions BT had in force when you originally took service from them. There have been subtle changes to make you liable for these type of costs - a bit like premium texts, but I agree with you, there should be some mechanism where the billpayer can demand that any reverse-billing services may not be offered to you line.

I have premium rate barring on my telewest line and can't accept calls from 0800reverse. Might be worth looking into if the same works for BT unless you make other premium calls

How does this work Dave? I can understand that NTL can block 09xxx calls easily, but since 0800 Reverse only require a verbal agreement for the recipient telephone number (before they charge it), it seems too easy to get round.

XXX EDIT XXX
Just found out - Nobody can call cable telephones using thsi service, so PRB isn't the issue - imply it has to be BT or a mobile originating the call.
XXX XXX XXX

You can opt out of receiving calls from them, on their website it says:

"II. Cancellation - should the service no longer be required please contact 0800 Reverse at the details in section 3 ‘Contact Details’. 0800 Reverse will ensure that you can no longer receive 0800 Reverse reverse charge calls or messages to your telephone number. You will be responsible for all applicable charges relating to use of the service up to the time of cancellation of the service.

The contact details for 0800 Reverse are:

Customer Service Telephone Number: 0845 0 779 000
E-mail: customerservice@0800rever se.co.uk

0800 Reverse Limited
20 Canning Place
London W8 5AD
United Kingdom

Here are a few of their terms and conditions - and do remember since the person making the call is NOT the customer (YOU are, as recipient) these conditions should be challenged as you've not knowingly agreed to them:

2. YOUR OBLIGATIONS
2.1 You are responsible for all applicable charges for use of the Service whether such Calls were accepted by you or another person with or without your knowledge or consent.
2.2 0800 Reverse does not guarantee that a Calling Party's call or any message recorded by the Calling Party will be accepted by the Answering Service or connected to the Specified Number or delivered to the Specified Number by 0800 Reverse as this is dependent on your acceptance or otherwise of the call or mesage, the outcome of any monitoring of the message and other factors beyond the reasonable control of 0800 Reverse.
2.3 You must not, and ensure that third parties (including the Calling Party) do not, use the Service to transmit any defamatory, offensive, abusive, indecent, menacing, illegal or hoax material or other material that would otherwise constitute a breach of any duty or obligation owed to 0800 Reverse or any third party. You must also not, and ensure that third parties (including the Calling Party) do not, use the Service to interfere with calls made by any person or tamper with the Service in any way. You indemnify and shall keep indemnified 0800 Reverse against all claims, costs, loss, expenses or injuries arising in relation to a breach of this clause.
2.4 When using the Service, you must comply with, and ensure others comply with, all laws, regulations, codes or determinations or any other requirements of any government or statutory authority.
2.5 You must use, and ensure that third parties (including the Calling Party) use, the Service only for the purpose of reverse charge calls and delivering messages as outlined in the Description of Services.

3. FEES
3.1 0800 Reverse will charge you for the Service and for all Calls accepted and for all messages accepted using the Service.

3.2 If the Service, or associated services, are suspended or cancelled, you will remain liable for charges and liabilities incurred before the suspension or cancellation.

4. BILLING

4.1 BT or your provider of Electronic Communications Services may provide billing services to 0800 Reverse for Calls connected using the Service and for messages accepted using the Service.

4.2 If a Call is connected to or a message is accepted on your Answering Service and your Standard Telephone Service is billed by BT (i.e. you are a customer of BT) or your Resale Services Provider (i.e. you are a Resale Customer of a Resale Services Provider), BT may bill the Call Charges and other charges relating to the Service for that Call to you or your Resale Services Provider.

4.3 BT or your provider of Electronic Communications Services may print on your bill the phone number of the Calling Party. The Calling Party acknowledges and agrees to the number of the Standard Telephone Service or payphone the Calling Party is calling from being printed on the bill and agrees to use the Service on this basis.

My GF's sister once tried to call our line using 0800reverse but it wouldn't work. I assumed it was because I had premium barring set up on my line by cable to prevent me running up a huge bill in my first 6 months and assumed it applied for reverse billed numbers too.

I stand corrected though it's good to know I'll never fall victim to 0800 reverse even when PCB is lifted in approx 3 months

when you receive a call from someone using 0800reverse does it advise you of the call charges prior to connecting them? If not then you could say that as you were not advised of the call charges they are unenforcable

Jesus I've just seen how much this costs. £3.49 connection followed by 50p per min after first 30 seconds from a landline or £3.99 connection followed by 60p per min after first 30 seconds from a mobile.

Do people actually willingly pay this or do they just not realise how much it costs.

I've not tried it as I've a cable line and it says it cannot connect to this number. Its largely an automated service so it does need the call recipient to agree on a call by call basis, but then this agreeemnt may not come from the bill payer, so I wonder if it has been tested in court.

Also of note is if the person you are calling is unavailable, for £2 you can leave them a voicemail message - the costs are mind boggling. What I found increditble is they've aimed this service at mobile users who have run out of credit, yet all PAYG networks make a charge for 0800 calls, and even contract customers - with the exception of a few Orange tariffs that make 0500/0800/0808 calls free, they all charge. I don't call this joined up thinking!

I beleive 0800 reverse is free on some, but not all, mobile networks. They probably have an arrangement to pay the networks something for handling these calls for free. Not like they can't afford it out of what they charge for each call
