I just purchased my credit file online and I see that I have forgot to pay a very, very old phone account from 2002.

It was originally £214 and now its showing as £1712.00.

If you don't call Orange, you'll never know what's going on! The longer you leave it, the worse it'll be in the long run. You should Subject Access Request them or it'll be on your file for ever!

I though there was a limit on how long a unpaid dept could be kept active? If orange hasn't contacted you about it I would ring up and query why.

No it won't it will drop off after six years. Be careful when contacting them. If you admit any liability this would reset the statory limit clock and the six years will start again.

S.A.R. is a good idea but it might be more prudent to send a request under the CCA 1974, (not to mention a bit cheaper), specifically advising them that you do not recognise any debt with them.

No it wouldnt. It's not a CCA matter . (No credit was involved - it is a service contract). A S.A.R - (Subject Access Request) is the only way to get the information you require.

I believe accounts which report back to credit reference agencies only drop off 6 years after they are marked 'settled'.

No, that's not my understanding - the information held about you is limited to the last 6 years on a rolling basis, if your account was closed with a default, then that stays for six years - however if the reporting company still treats your account as 'active' and is adding to the default balance, then this data will continue to be shown. Court CCJs will fall off whether marked satisfied or not.

What he said.

The six years starts from the last activity which confirms the account, (i.e. payment from you, default registered etc...), this is irrespective of the status of the account.
