Unhappy The confusing world of BT

Hey hey,

I've been reading through all sorts of forums searching for people who have had trouble with BT and this appears to be the best one to come for help! They've got me a bit panicky at the moment so i hope someone can help!

Right, here's my story: I've just moved house and have called BT up about 7 times now to try and get my services changed to my new address (i was on BT phone line option 2 international calls). The first 6 times i kept being told someone would call me back as their systems were down (over a whole week??). Eventually, on the seventh day of calling i spoke to a lady who said it should all be fine, but then put me on hold as she had to check some details. When she came back to me she told me that as the previous resident (now my landlord) was with another provider (turns out to be Talk Talk, which my landlord told me he cancelled when he moved out) I have to pay the £124 re-connection fee!! Which i certainly cannot afford to pay. She could tell i was getting p*ssed off and asked if i wanted to speak to someone who could explain it a bit better, to which i said yes. Then i got this rude woman on the phone who despite being british, couldn't seem to understand what i was talking about. I told her i couldn't afford to pay this extortionate amount and asked her what the alternative options are, to which she replied there are none and i have to pay the fee and basically hung up the phone.

So i'm a bit stuck now. I'm still paying for the line at my old flat, and have no phone line! So here are a few points and queries i wondered if anyone could help me with:
  • I always thought Talk Talk ran through BT (meaning you need a BT line to have Talk Talk as your provider). If this is true, then surely i don't need to pay £124 for reconnection as there will already be a line?
  • This one's a long shot, but would BT agree for me to get the new tennant at my old flat to take on the contract (If she agrees to it ofcourse - only 6months left in contract)? Was thinking it would save me alot of hassel, but i figured that this was me being desperate and unrealistic.
  • I read on another forum that if i want to be with another service provider (Tiscali in this instance) i could call them up and they would agree to pay-off my BT contract and sign me over to them. I think this sounds a bit far-fetched, but you never know!
  • Is there anyway i can suspend my current BT line so that i'm not paying for something i'm not using?
The thing i don't get about this reconnection charge is its like they're punishing there customers for moving house. I thought the charge would only apply for houses where phone lines have never existed, such as new builds, not ones that have had phone lines in them before.

I'm sorry i've waffled so much, I'm just really confused about what to do and its really bringing me down as i'm enough debt as it is without BT's nonsense fees!

Default Re: The confusing world of BT

OK, unfortunatly BT has been screwed over a little, and they cannot touch a talktalk line (it is a line owned by BT but plugged into talktalk equipment in the exchange)

However, check this link out :- Notices 2008 25/08 Calling Plans - Line Connection Special Offer

That is the latest connection deal, knock that price down a bit for ya

Alternativly, plug a phone into the existing socket and dial 150. This should get you thrugh to the current supplier on that line. Inform them of the fact that you are the new tennent and there should be no connection charge for you!

Good luck!
