Default Orange Tariff Reduction

After you have been on an 18 month contract on orange for 9 months, I understand you can bring you tariff down by £5 per month, I thought there was no limit on how many times you could do this, somebody please correct me if I am wrong.

Because I have been told by a member of Orange's CS that you can only do this once for the duration of your 18 month contract.......

Hi Hirst

That is correct I'm afraid. It has been that way since about April 07 I think. Talk plans, once past the halfway point can be lowered down one price plan (even if the next one down is £10, so not limited to £5 only, it is the very next step down) and only the one time.

I was talking to a lady at Orange the other day because I have a dispute with the signal in my area, and she told me that I could drop down to the next tariff each month !

you may be on an older contract (more than 12 months in) that did allow a drop every month. As said in post #2 the policy changed for all new connections and upgrades around April 07 (could have been August though!!) will have to check!

Once you take out your contract, you have to stay on that tarriff for a minimum of half the contract length. however, if you want to move to a more expensive tarriff, you can do that whenever you like.

once you have passed that halfway mark, you can move down one tarriff banding at a time per month.

the reason they stop you from moving to cheaper tarriffs, is:

people where taking out expensive tarriffs to get free expensive phones. once the first month had passed, they would then reduce the tarriff right down to the minumum, and sometimes stop using the contract completely. this meant that Orange were loosing money, as they do subsidide most of the cost of the phone.

I sell mobiles and know the networks have brought in these policies to prevent people taking higher tariffs for a few months to get a phone for less moneythan it would be on a low tariff.

However I would be interested in the validity of this policy especially if someone is struggling to make payments. Might be worth writing to them using a version of some of the templates on here to see if they will help.
