Question 3 Contract Advise Please

Is there anybody who can help me (or rather my daughter) out of a 3 contract?

My daughter who is 19 very stupidly took out a 3 contract her name for her boyfriend to use. 9 months later they have split up and my daughter has been left with a £98 phone bill and the remaining contract which is up June 2009.

She has tried to cancel the contract with 3 as quite frankly there is no way she can afford to pay for it herself. There circular reasoning is that in order to cancel it she would have to pay a cancellation fee which just happens to be the monthly payment times by the number of months she has left!!!! approx £300.00

She has explained that since she cannot pay the monthly fee let alone the cancellation charge but they wont budge!

I totally understand she has signed an contact and that it is binding but surely there is something she can do!

They wont even let her reduce her montly plan unless she pays the cancellation fee up front. If she fails to pay then they have told her they would put it out to a collection agency.

We are a 1 parent family and my daughter is a student and has very little money as it is.

Any advice would be really appreciated.

Who has the phone? If the BF still has it say it has been misplaced and get a replacement SIM that you can actually use. She's lucky it was only a mobile contract and not a wedding licence (!) at least the pains will be short term, but a valuable lesson gained. As a relative YOU could take on the contract and the burden will move to you, and you can put the SIM into any unlocked 3G phone, or the original handset if that is still available.
