Default cancelling vodafone

Sent them a letter on the 19th May requesting to cancel my contract as it had expired anyway. Got a letter a few weeks later asking for more information which I sent. I've telephoned and been told to fax the cancellation which is what I've done. I've also e-mailed twice but I'm still none the wiser as to whether its going to be cancelled.

Any advice??

It looks as though they're having difficulty in establishing the contract you want to cancel. Your contract hasn't 'expired' you've just completed the minimum term, it will always continue until you request otherwise.

Providing you give them 30 days cleat notice from your usual billing day, the cancellation should be easily managed. This may mean it could take up to 45 days in total if you've missed the usual billing date, but the rule of thumb is WRITE giving all the details of the mobile and account numbers and that you wish it cancelled and are giving 30 days notice. Send this by Recorded Delivery and keep a copy in case they slip up. After the final bill (which can arrive up to 30 days after the phone is turned off) this will not have any line rental, but only the cost of calls and texts. If you have a Direct Debit active, cancel this ONLY after they have taken this final payment.

Thanks for the reply... the phone went off on Friday which is good but still a little miffed that they didnt notify me when it would be going off, I don't know when the line rental ran till but as I notified them of cancellation on the 19th May I will assume that the direct debit due to be taken on the 30th June should cover everything.

That would be a reasonable assumption, providing you've not been roaming abroad. I'd put a note in your diary to cancel the DD on 1st July, but DO make sure they acknowledge your cancellation. (It saves a bundle of problems later!)

Hi Buzby

They have today e-mailed me (see below) advising me not to cancel my direct debit as I won't get the final bill till 3 weeks time.

I'm not sure why they would need to take any payment after the 30th June.

"(I've checked your account and can confirm that your account has been cancelled on the 20th of June 2008.
You’ll receive your final bill about 3 weeks after your account closes and I would like to mention you not to cancel your Direct Debit until your final bill has been paid. You will be charged the line rental and usage charges, if any until the date of disconnection)"

It really all depends on how your cancellation fits in with their billing date and their calling for the final funds (usually out of bundle call charges and texts). Once this happens they flag your credit file as having concluded your contract with no arrears.
