Default Tiscali offer to half my home phone/broadband bill!

I've just a call from a very pleasant gentleman from Tiscali, with an offer that seems too good to be true. Baisically, he said if I switch my home phone from BT to Tiscali, then I would get 8mg broadband & free calls to UK landlines (excluding non-geo numbers & premium rate) for £19.99 a month. I'm currently paying £14.99 for 2mg broadband & approx £25-£30 to BT for line rental & calls.

I'd just like to know if anyone else either has themselves or knows someone who have Tiscali as their home phone provider, and if so, what's the verdict? It's obviously a very tempting offer since the free calls to landlines also applies during the day & they're offering me a faster internet connection. I'm just concerned that these "too good to be true" offers often are & that I'll end up getting stung for more money somewhere down the line. Either that, or I'll be subscribing to a sub-standard provider, who'll have their claws into me for 12-18 months (unless I pay some extortianate fee to end the contract). Or am I just being cynical & looking a gift horse in the mouth?

Haven't used them personally but from what I've heard the service is generally quite good. However if something goes wrong, their customer service/aftersales is rather poor.

Ask for it in writing.. you'll see the small print then. Be careful thats its not an offer just for 3 months or something like that. Remember the Tiscali offer on tv for £6.99 each month? It wasn't until end that it said... for three months... in the small print on the tv ad.

Just had a look on the Tiscali homepage & according to that, what they are offering is for £14.99 a month for the first 3 months, then it goes up to £19.99. Unfortunately, no small print details that I could find. Think I'll ask them to mail me the info before I commit!

I believe there is a one off £30 connection fee, I also believe talktalk have a similar deal (also has a £30 connection fee). Also you may have problems chainging providers at the end of the minimum term to anyone except BT, as this process makes your line a tiscali line over a BT line, and most providers state "must have a BT line". I know people have had problems getting sky on one of these lines for instance.

I'm just trying to post some possible problems that may arise so you are fully informed and you can look into it before commiting yourself.

Good luck and enjoy any savings you make

DO NOT USE TISCALLI!!!!!!!!!

Even the debt collection agencies think they are rubbish (i used to work for one)

They are really inefficient and are too quick to send unpaid bills to debt collection agencies (most of the time when they have been paid) and will often keep charging you after you have decided to no longer use their services.

I once spoke to a woman, who tried to get tiscalli installed, it didnt work etc so she cancelled it, and they tried to charge her for the whole years subscription plus cancellation fees etc.

they're really really crap

It's already been said in this thread that customer service is poor. Thats probably why they can provide it so cheep. If all you want is a basic broadband and phone package with no bells and whistles for as low a price as possible, not a lot is going to beat them tho I'm afraid.

As for "debt collection agencies think they are rubbish" that would be an endorsement for me TO get tiscali LOL

I've spoken to loads of people that have cancelled broadband and been disapointed that they are liable for charges. If you cancel after the first 14 days you are locked into a contract. The way to cancel is to get the company to agree that they cannot supply you with broadband and cancel that way.
