Thumbs up Porting your Mobile Number to another Network - BE AWARE!

About a month ago I jumped ship from Orange to O2.

I called to get my PAC code so I could transfer my number to O2, and after a pleasant 10 min chat with the chap at Orange was given my PAC code. A letter with the pac code also followed about 5 days later.

2 days ago I got my final bill. This morning I was just about to call up and pay it, but decided to check it first.

Lo and behold there was a £14.47 + VAT charge on there for the PAC Code.

Called them up and asked what the charge was for, and after 17 minutes of holding was told it was for a pac code. I told the woman that I was never told there would be a charge for this and that I wanted it refunded. She decided to put me through to the accounts dept. Conversation with accounts dept in India went like this.

OM: Hello this is Orange Mobile. How can we help you today?

Me: You have added a charge of £14.47 to my final bill for a PAC code and I want it refunded. I was never told there would be a charge.

OM: (after confirming account details) Can you hold please while I check

Me: Yup

OM: It is for PAC code you ordered on xxx.

ME: Yes I know what it is for. I want to know why you have charged me for It. I was never told there would be a charge.

OM: Can you hold one moment please?

Me: Yup

OM: Hello...Thank you for holding....

ME: (interrupting) Where in the world are you?

OM: India

Me: ok

OM: .......when you transfer number there is charge for that service. I can only apologise that you were not told.

ME: Yeah..well I want it refunded.

OM: Miss xxxxx, You should have been told this, and I can only aplogise that you were not told.

ME: It's xxxxx. Not xxxxx, and you can apologise all you like I'm not paying it. If I had been told about it - fair enough - but I wasn't.

OM: Ok Miss xxxx (correct name this time ) I will make a credit to your account for £14.47. I do that now.

ME: And what about the vat? You have charged me vat on that amount.

OM: a what?

ME: vat!! Vat of £2.25. Total of £17.00. That is how much you need to take off the bill.

OM: I don't understand.

ME: vat!! vat!!! V-A-T!! Value Added Tax at 17.5%

OM: Ok.. you will need to pay full balance of £37.13 and then we will make credit.

ME: You want me to do what ?!?!:o You just said that you had applied a credit of £14.47, so why do I now need to pay the full amount?

OM: You need to pay full amount before we can apply credit to your account.

ME: And how do you intend to do that? The account is closed.

OM: We will send you cheque for £17.00 in next 7-10 days.

ME: I don't think so! You take off that £17.00 and I pay the bill in full today. I don't want you people owing me money.

OM: You will need to pay full amount.

ME: I tell you what. You send me a new bill with the £17 adjustment and then I'll pay it. I don't trust you lot.

OM: I just told you I have applied credit of £17.00 to your account.

ME: Look...first you said you'd refund £14.47. Then you said I'd have to pay the full amount. Now you say you have taken off £17.00. I don't believe or trust you. When I receive a final bill with the adjustment then I'll pay it.

OM: If that's what you want to do ok.

ME: And you will send me a new bill with the adjusted balance right?

OM: Yes. Is there anything we can help you with today?

ME: No

OM: Thank you for calling Orange.

Another victory for the consumer!! I hate it when these organisations try and rob people. Imagine how many other people out there who prob don't check their bills and pay up without realising they have been charged to transfer their number. Makes me so mad...if they had made this clear in the beginning I wouldn't have had a problem. But they didn't.

Orange send you a txt message with your Pac code - No mention of a charge. They even follow that up a few days later with a letter containing your pac code - and again no mention of a charge.

So my advice to you is to check your final bills for any little surprises they may leave in there, and if they leave any little stinky loads in there - call em up and demand it back.

POWER TO THE PEOPLE!!

i used to work within the number porting department @ vodafone. as a firm we were not allowed to create a charge for pac codes or any administration surrounding the transfer process. i would imagine a little chat with the regulators might be worth while

sorry for being picky but the VAT isn't £2.25 its £2.53 making your final total correct at £17 otherwise it would have been £16.72 you were asking for.

I think it's important that the sums are correct when dealing with people/Companies.

Again sorry for being picky.

Thanks for your input. Clearly a typo.

My £17 has been deducted from the final bill, and the account settled.
