This is a bit of a long read - you've been warned
During early June last year I signed up for a package with a phone company called Toucan who provide broadband, call and phone line services. A week or so after signing my call service were active but my line was still with my previous provider as toucan had no taken it over yet. I phoned toucan regarding this and was told they were unable to give me a date/time when this would be done. So a week or so passed and still no date set so I decided to cancel my account. After explaining to customer services, my account was cancelled. I received a letter in the post days later heading 'sorry you're leaving' and 'we have been advised by another supplier that you would like them to provide your telephone call services' one from BT welcoming me back. About a month or so passed and a letter arrived from Toucan stating I owe for them for line rental charges. I phoned their customer services about the matter and was told that BT had only took over the call services and not the line and I was still liable to pay them for rental of the line. I was paying BT line rental at the time so I got in contact with them and was told that Toucan were in the wrong and that they don’t take back just calls services but the whole thing.
Sorry if it’s a bit confusing.
Fast forward a bit and I didn’t end up paying Toucan in the end.
So a year after and I come across a letter from Toucans debt collectors and decide to give it a call. After speaking to their customer services I was told that my account had not been defaulted and this was only done when told to do so by the lender. I paid off the full outstanding amount owing and was going to take up the matter of a refund from toucan at a later date.
Today I received a copy of my credit file from Experian to find toucan had defaulted my account.
I intend on getting a copy of all bills from both Toucan and BT to see who rightfully owned the line and whom I was to pay for the line rental.
My argument is that whether or not BT took back the line, Toucan had no right to continue with activating it as I had already cancelled my account with them as far as I was concerned. To this toucan say that if they had never continued to activate it, the line would then have been dead. To me, it was not their problem and was something for me to have dealt with.
The thing is, now I don’t know where I stand. If BT are right I presume toucan have to remove the default and refund me but if Toucan are right I will be left with a default even though it’s been settled.
Should I have just paid off the outstanding amount in the first place and taking the matter up with Toucan at a later or was I right to leave it.
If you've made it to the bottom and are still awake, thanks lol.
