Default SLC not defering as child maintenance invalid as income

I had trouble last year defering with the slc and only managed to do this as I enrolled for one more term at university, basically my income is child maintenance, child tax credit and child benefit, they said none of these are my income but my child's so they cannot defer my loan as I have to prove how I am maintained. Obviously if they take all of these away my income is zero. I cannot claim income support as my child maintenance is just over the threshold, I do get housing benefit when not enrolled at uni as they count child maintenance etc as income and this is still low.

Now this problem is going to happen again in a few months, I will not be going to work as I have decided at least for 18 months to home school my daughter and my income will be as above only. It seems ridiculous, but I need to sort out this issue which might in fact be an issue for other single parents.

I really don't know what to say about this except the SLC are idiots.

Perhaps you should ask the DSS to give you a letter stating the reasons you are not entitled to Income Support and send a copy to the SLC. If the government recognise your maintenance etc as your income then the SLC can't have a leg to stand on.

Have you spoken to the SU about this?

Either SU or local council welfare rights officer might be someone to try. They may not be able to get you anymore income but they should be able to advise you further about you situation legally.
