defaulted student loan Hi, I came across this site whilst trawling through the net attempting to find some information regarding my rather drastic circumstances re: defaulted student loans. I wonder could anyone help me here? My circumstances are as follows.
I took student loans from 1997 -1999 and left Britain immediately following graduation. Over the following years i moved around Europe a lot and, although i have never earned even close to the amount over which one has to pay, i did not file deferment requests (people i worked with in seasonal work in Holland who attempted to do so found their deferment efforts repeatedly frustrated by an unhelpful student loans company bureaucracy hence i didn't even bother).
Three or four years ago, the SLC made contact through family in Ireland, at this stage i was actually in Ireland and made contact with them to explain that my income was then marginally less than a social welfare payment and that hence i could not pay them. At this point I hope posters might refrain from comments on my stupidity because i (stupidly) left the country again and did not even fulfil a provisional agreement to pay a small amount to the SLC.
At this late stage, although I have heard nothing from the SLC since 2004 i would like to do something about the debt and at least have the option of possibly living in Britain again at some point in the future. I'm sure the original debt has substantially increased and that there's a county court judgement against me although i've had no communications with the company. My financial circumstances are still such that i do not earn much. On a discussion thread elsewhere a poster recommended to someone living abroad that they might call and offer the SLC a one off payment of substantially less than the outstanding sum in order to have the debt written off, perhaps this was nonsense, would anyone have any ideas or advice? cheers. |
