Fee for course not attended

Hi

I registered and attended the first year of two year course and paid my fees in full for that year.

The college states that a person wanting to withdraw from the course must write to them, I did not do this. I did not re-register for the second year and recieved no learning materials relating to the second year.

The college has now written to me stating that I may be liable for any "applicable fees".

I don't see how I can be liable for any further fees. I settled my fees for the classes I attended. I then did not re-register and recieved no learning materials from the college.

Any advice ?

surely if you don't register then you're not allowed to attend classes and if you don't attend classes then they have nothing to bill you for?

Is registration a requirement for entering the next year of study?

I suspect that the college will argue that you don't re register for the 2nd year as you are already registered on the course, hence the need to withdraw in writing which you accept that you did not do. The college may therefore have assumed that you were continuing and be entitled to charge you. Had you notified them of your intent to withdraw they could have covered their loss by reallocating your place. I suspect that will will continue to chase you for the fees.

In order to collect learning materials for the second year, I would have needed to re-register. Therefore re-registration is a requirement for starting the second year.
