Advice for A-level student!

Hi,

I am an A-level student, studying design & technology at my local grammar school. As part of this I have to do a design-based project, and I have decided to base my project around people with disabilities, and the problems they face interacting with everyday life.

Using this idea as the basis of my A-level is ideal for me as it means there is a real point and focus of everything that I do, be it in research, design or making stages.

However, I cannot do the very first stage alone – I need the thoughts and opinions of the people I am basing my project around, and this is where (hopefully) you come in. I need to hear from people with disabilities exactly what problems they have during their everyday life. This can be any kind of problem, from holding or carrying a cup of tea, to picking something up off the floor – anything at all.

Personally, I suffer from Chron’s Disease (an irritable bowel disease) so I can understand the kind of situations you may describe, even if not directly I will still be able to understand your point of view. Also, I use the term disability very loosely: it really can be anything (for example, you are in a wheelchair, or you suffer from any other type of disability or have experience of either of these two).

It might be worth contacting the occupational therapy department at your local hospital - they deal with adaptations for disability and could provide you with some ideas/info. They may even allow you to go and spend a day with an OT.
