Default obtaining an independant assesment???

hi s it possible to obtain an independant assesment of my sons s.e.n im having to appeal against a refusal to assess him but was wondering if there was anyone who assesss him who isnt necassarily to do with the L.E.A or school as I personally feel we are told one thing yet evidence contridicts this and an outside body would have nothing to gain or loose by what they say or suggest... we dont mind having to pay for this but would prefer it to be free ...lesley

Can't help with personally this I'm afraid.

Is there a charity for your son's condition that might be able to give advice, or have you tried one of the many internet sites for special needs?

Is this for a particular special educational need?

I paid privately for my son to be assessed by an independent educational psychologist after the school insisted he did not have dyslexia - turns out he has severe dyslexia.

It costs about £400 - however, if you give a few more details, there may be ways to get your LEA to assess him.

Sorry, you can find a psychologist to assess your son independently here: The British Psychological Society

Lesley
Having independant reports done can cost a fortune. It is essential you get the right reports done. We had to have many done for the statementing of our son. The educational psychology report alone cost £800 10years ago. It was the most comprehensive report I have ever seen. Involved her coming home to assess and going to school to assess. What SEN does your child have? Some organisations will do fee reduced reports eg Scope

Go to your local Dyslexia Action Centre. Their Head Office is 01784 222300. They have a bank of psychologists and will charge you around £400 for a report. Their psychologists often appear as expert witnesses at SEN tribunals for parents. They also have bursaries for teaching if you ask for a bursary form the next meeting is in November to allocate funds.Hope this helps.
