Has anyone else been charged £175 for a returned cheque at Lloyds TSB? Outrageous or what? I'm in the process of claiming back charges and had to chuckle at their offer to send me statements for a fee of £10. I almost thought they were offering me a discounted bargain, which I would have gone for if I hadn't kept most statements and got the rest from on-line banking. I mean, surely it costs more time and revenue to print off a hundred sheets of statements, not to mention the postage, than it does to recieve a returned cheque?
Although I have not had a £175 charge, I have had 3 amounts of £140 for unpaid direct debits and 2 charges for £120 for unpaid standing orders, I did not realise this until checking back on my statements.
The answer to your question is YES OUTRAGEOUS CHARGE :o
It's the worst charge of many. Several times they have charged £90 a month or £70 a month for unpaid direct debits and they have a habit of showing everything taken out before wages applied when its the same date. If they applied wages first then Direct Debits etc there wouldn't be such charges. Actually it's my partners account, and I recently went into Lloyds to pay some cash in his account to cover the charges so he wouldn't get more charges and I was asked to do a survey. Well, it was all about the look of the branch, was it attractive? What did I think about the carpets? How easy was it to find what I was looking for? Was I impressed with the posters in the window display? Did I like the carpets? Did I think that it stood out fron all the other banks? (I'd say so but nothing to do with the cosmetics) Once that was done I was asked if I would start banking at Lloyds, being it was more roomy and apparently stylish. No way! I'll stick to banking with Nationwide thanks. How I love queuing in that small, friendly, cosy branch, knowing my money is safe and I am well looked after. So, one wonders how much Lloyds are going to spend on making it the bank every wants to go to because it looks good and how much it's customers have contributed to the privikedge of having nice carpets and glam posters? By the way, Nationwide has nice carpets and posters too and good honest people.
have you been in to the bank and questioned this amount? it may have been a mistake or a typing error. I would go in and question it.
I only knew about it when I took over sorting my partners account out and so I just got on with making a claim for all the silly charges. He got to the point of shutting his eyes to it because the charges were so crazy and had taken over his account and he just couldn't get straight no matter how he tried. It's like Lloyds are just helping themselves to his hard earned wages. Fingers crossed we can get it all back and get straight and happy.
Not on your own with the high charges, one month was charged £180 for unpaid DD and the same month £60 for unpaid SO, a total of £240, I think it is a charge for each direct debit eg: 6 at £30 each and the same for the standing orders.
They will find it hard to justify these as service a charge when it gets to Court, exactly what service has been provided to cost more than 50% of someones monthly salary, when we all know it is an automated service and costs next to nothing.
I have a sneaky feeling these may have come from the paperwork the Copy Date Unit has sent you, so they may be multiples of £30 i.e 6 x £30 - just a thought

Its even worse if you have a Lloyds loan . if DD returned they then try every week so you end up with 4 illegal charges plus the £90 per month . my advice is to cancel DD and a pay some other way .

Thanks for the thought . . . your right....just double checked back into old statements in 2006. It was for 3 returned DD's, that makes me feel a bit better i(albeit in a strange way),Grrrr...they amounted to far less than the charges too. Am not going to let them take anymore thats for sure.

I know that feeling have been charged 290 at one point, and got to the point that Iwas afraid to look at my statements when they arrived. was charged 1470 in one year on one account and on the same year 1035 on another.
