You can almost understand the banks doing it but when government departments are up to it too there's no real hope it can be effectively
    regulated

I agree with that, but the one that really gets my goat is that there are two reasons you would call:
    • Proactive - you choose to call because you want something, or you are responding to an offer invitation
    • Reactive - you call because you have been told to, or because you have a complaint
For the former it is only fair that you should pay for the call, although the cost of the call is a matter for debate

For the latter the company in question should bear the cost of the call, especially if you have been supplied faulty goods. Why should you pay for something (that doesn't work) and then pay again for a remedy?

Complian to the OFT, they want to know!

It comes under unfair practices " asking or instructing debtors to make contact on premium rate telephone numbers" in debt collectionicon Guidance (Updated December 2006)

They (the OFT) WILL act IF enough people complain to them.

They could - and should - have their Credit Licenses revoked

The OFT have had zillions of complaints about bank charges and so far
have done bu**er all about it. I don't think premium rate calls would
    fall within their remit anyway.

Sorry to be tiresome, but, debt collectionicon guidance, Final guidance on unfair business practices, (updated December 2006) Section 2 Communication 2.2 Examples of unfair practices are as follows: para h " asking or instructing debtors to make contact on premium telephone numbers". Looks to me like it's in the OFT remit! C'mon lets try it, if only for the fun of it. It costs nothing, its all done by freepost

I'm still very sceptical. I think it would just get refered to Ofcom but whoever it is, a few complaints wouldn't have any value unless you had
evidence that you had been asked or instructed to call and had phone bills
etc. It might be worth making a few calls to find out who regulates this area and making some informal enquiries. I'll try in the morning ok?

You'v had the evidence, "Immediate Action Needed phone 0870".
The publication is OFT664, there are other bits in there as well like "pressurising debtors to pay in full, in unreasonably large installments, or to increase payments when they are unable to do so"
I'm in it upto my neck, they have irked me so I'm going for it even if it is only as an irritant, you never know.
    Enjoy
