I bought a car on hp from a local car dealer a couple of years ago for £3500. The car was sold to me, was advertised on autotrader and had a stickered windscreen as having full service history. When I picked the car up the service book, I was told was not available, but they would get it for me. Alarm bells should have rang, but I was happy at the time. Eventually they provided me with just a printed bit of paper. Showing mileage and dates of supposed services. No other information than that. It was even supposed to have had a service and a PDI before I picked it up.
Looking back there was lots of things I should have done and maybe should have rejected the car from the off. The PDI I imagined was a bucket of water. For a full service car I ended up replacing things like the brake disks and pads only a few months after I bought it. After about a year I realised the car was actually a bit of a nail and not the well looked after example the dealer had assured it was.
My HP term was only a couple of years. I had some money spare about a year ago, so I paid off the finance. I then sold the car on, for quite a loss unfortunately and cursed my naivety.
Anyway back to the real matter. Reading my local paper the other day their is a news story on the car dealer. He had been sentenced in court for miselling cars. Trading standards had closed him down and had been charged for selling cars as FSH that were actually not. 12 other similar cases are now to be brought against him and compensation will be paid to those affected.
Now - Should I highlight my own matter. I'm not sure who to, so would need some advice. The problem I foresee is that the deal was never in dispute. I never made a complaint at the time. As I have now sold the car, I no longer have the paperwork. Should I just take comfort that he has gotten caught and put it down to experience or would I have a duty to raise a case.
